  1. Steve,
This is one of the best Hot Pipes program subjects you’ve produced. This brings up a lament you made about CDs not selling any more.

Much music was composed for and performed by such pops groups as the Mills Brothers, the Platters, the Ames Brothers, the Brothers Four, the list of vocal groups singing in memorable two, three, four and even five part harmony. Why hasn’t any enterprising organist produced an album featuring tunes recorded by these groups? I have Vlasak’s several DCs featuring this era, as well as the Kelsall and Ogden CDs. I target specific songs on iTunes and Amazon, and the low price lets me buy more favorite songs.
Before the Theatre Organ world goes to the Wailing Wall at the old Wurlitzer building to lament the demise of their hobby, how about targeting today’s aging population by offering the songs of our youth? Your selection of music for Hot Pipes 190 demonstrates it can be successfully done.

If nothing else, why cannot these artists repackage the pops songs they’ve already recorded from this 1950s-70s era and offer them on iTunes or Amazon Music?

Why don’t I buy the albums which already include one or two such songs? I prefer buying exactly the songs I want to hear, and not wasting money on songs I don’t like. Let’s hear more of Bobby Darin-composed songs such as, “The Longest Day”, “You Are My Destiny”, to name two favorites.

Please hurry, though, the 50s music lovers are starting to die off also.

  2. Hi Steve. Love you useless bits of trivia. Keep them coming.
On the subject of why CDs aren’t selling and conversely not being made I think that part of the reason is the internet. Almost anyone can go on line and down load a song or two from diverse locations with out buying the whole album. I must admit that I buy and down load single selections more often these days than complete albums. I also know several folks that have given up buying albums altogether. In the 40’s and 50’s folks bought a 78 or 45 disk (remember those with the big hole in the center) and it had one or two songs on it. Perhaps we could go back to that kind of format. Possibly organ recording artists should think about doing something similar and not focus on albums. Of course there is always the themed album similar to this weeks Hot Pipes presentation that would appeal to many. Just my two cents.

  3. Stan and Fred – you both make some excellent points. It seems to me that, although that many in theatre organ community have been slow and quite resistant to buying downloads, it’s the only feasible way to go with the volume of sales so low now. I will be releasing my older CDs on iTunes shortly and will, I think, have to go that route in future. It’s certainly a lot less work and doesn’t entail a pretty sizeable outlay.
