  1. Thanks, Roger. Such a shame that there are none left in the theatres in San Francisco. I heard the Castro Wurlitzer in person and it was very special!

  2. David Diffenderfer

I lived in the pizza and pipes places in the Bay Area from 1958 to1965. Returning to the Bay Area I in 1970 I returned to Ye Olde Pizza Joynt with Bill Langford and Captains Galley in Daily City with Larry Embury.Took lessons from Larry Embury in the early 1980s. Helped George Wright try to save the San Francisco Fox in 1963 and now volunteer at Blackwood Center for the Performing Arts in Harrisville, Pennsylvania. Blackwood has a 3/20 Wurlitzer and is one of three in the world to rise from covered pit and the only one in the United States..

  3. The Castro organ in San Francisco has been augmented electronically but is still in place.
Years ago I occasionally accompanied young Tom Hazleton after the lessons he received from Richard Purvis on the Crocker organ in Grace Cathedral to practice on the Orpheum Theatre organ on Market Street after the last movie showed.

  4. Sorry for the late response, beto155… The Castro Wurlitzer was removed by its owners as the theatre didn’t want to maintain it. The organ which is replacing it will be largely digital with a few pipe ranks, headed up by house organist, David Hegarty.
